DESCRIPTION:In an age of shifting boundaries across South Texas and northeastern Mexico\, many people caught between the numerous conflicts and battles flaunted international laws by smuggling goods across the Rio Grande. UTRGV professor and author of the book Birder Contraband: A History of Smuggling Across the Rio Grande George Diaz will present on the first thirty years following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the smugglers that continued to operate across the Rio Grande Valley. The presentation will be followed by a personal tour of the River Highway exhibit. \n

George Díaz is the author of “Border Contraband: A History of Smuggling Across the Rio Grande\,” and he will present a program on the first 30 years following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. He will also discuss the smuggling still ongoing along the Rio Grande. A complementary mini-tour of part of a museum exhibit will follow the presentation. \nWinter Texan Wednesday is included in the regular museum admission fee: Adults (18+) $8; Seniors (62+) $6. Museum admission also includes access to the signature Rio Grande Legacy exhibition.
