Winter Texan Wednesday: Smuggling in the Borderlands 1848-1881

In an age of shifting boundaries across South Texas and northeastern Mexico, many people caught between the numerous conflicts and battles flaunted international laws by smuggling goods across the Rio Grande. UTRGV professor and author of the book Birder Contraband: A History of Smuggling Across the Rio Grande George Diaz will present on the first thirty years following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the smugglers that continued to operate across the Rio Grande Valley. The presentation will be followed by a personal tour of the River Highway exhibit.
